Failure Mechanisms in Lap Shear Tests: Are you testing the adhesive or your sample preparation?
Selecting the right adhesive is crucial for product reliability in sectors ranging from consumer electronics to aerospace. To quantify the shear strength of these joints, standards such as ASTM D1002 and DIN 1465 are the industry standard.
Yet, in the laboratory, we regularly see data that fluctuates inexplicably. The harsh reality of materials testing is that a test result often says more about the quality of the test execution than about the mechanical properties of the adhesive itself.
When a lap joint fails, it is essential to correctly analyze the failure mechanism:
- Cohesive failure: The adhesive tears within itself. This is the only failure that is truly representative of the intrinsic strength of the adhesive.
- Adhesive failure: The adhesive detaches from the substrate. In practice, this country rarely indicates a poor adhesive, but can often be traced back to errors in the testing process.
The hidden variables in your testing process
To achieve data that your R&D or QA team can base decisions on, three critical variables must be strictly controlled:
- Preparation: Even minimal traces of grease or cleaning agents can turn a cohesive failure into an adhesive failure. In addition, the overlap (often exactly 12.5 mm) must be aligned and measured with extreme precision.
- Mechanical offset: Because the two test strips overlap, a thickness offset occurs. If your clamping system does not compensate for this offset, a bending moment is created during the tensile test, causing uneven loading on the adhesive layer.
- Interaction with the grip jaws: Serration that is too coarse damages your substrate; serration that is too fine gets clogged with material residue and causes micro-slip. Both scenarios contaminate your data.
