New supplier for Taber SandPaper strips

Taber Industries has announced a new supplier for their S-42 sandpaper strips (180 grit aluminum oxide, open coat, glue bond).

The supplier Taber has chosen provides the most consistent sandpaper that meets the mass loss requirements specified in the test methods. Prior to making this selection, extensive testing was conducted with the new sandpaper to ensure it would satisfy all performance requirements. No change will be made to the S-42 model number or part numbers, however a change in color (orange) will help identify this new sandpaper.

Reports of S-42 sandpaper strip exceeding acceptable range

Since this change, Taber has received several reports of the abrasion rate exceeding the acceptable range of 120 ± 20 mg when tested on the S-34 zinc plate. The qualification tests on this new sandpaper lot indicated it is slightly more aggressive than the product evaluated during our initial validation testing, and results are close to the upper limit of the acceptable range.

Initial validation testing of the “orange” S-42 sandpaper indicated an average mass loss within the acceptable range of 120 ± 20 mg (average of 4 lots tested = 125.6 mg, standard deviation = 9 mg). Furthermore,
these results suggested this new sandpaper exhibited less variability than the original 3M 210N grade.

To address the current concerns, Taber has proposed two options while we investigate further:

  1. Implement a ‘correction factor’ (refer to the “Determination of Abrasion Rate of Abrasive Paper” included with each S-42 box – #125718 rev S).
  2. Request a replacement box of S-42 sandpaper (please note that all Taber inventory is from the same lot, so this may not fully resolve the issue).

Taber has contacted the supplier and is actively investigating options to resolve this issue. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
